Rules change: check the latest
Metering rules for rooftop solar are set by NEPRA and applied by your electricity company (DISCO, such as LESCO, IESCO or K-Electric). They have changed more than once, and they can change again. Use this guide to understand the idea, then confirm the current rules, rates and fees with your DISCO or NEPRA before you decide anything.
Net metering in simple words
With net metering, one two-way meter counts units you take from the grid and units your solar sends back. Your bill is based on the difference. In effect, the electricity you export offsets what you use at another time.
Gross metering in simple words
With gross metering, the units you use and the units you export are counted and priced separately. You pay for imported units at the normal tariff and get credited for exported units at a rate set by the regulator, which can be lower. In late 2025 NEPRA announced a move towards this kind of arrangement for new solar users.
What this means for you
- Using your solar power yourself during the day (AC, motor, washing) usually pays more than exporting it.
- Size your system for your own daytime load, not only to sell units back.
- Batteries become more interesting when export pays less, but they add cost and need care.
- Existing users may have different terms from new users. Ask your DISCO which rules apply to your connection.
- Keep copies of your application, approvals and meter readings.
Getting the paperwork done
Many solar mistris help with the application file: documents, single-line diagram and meter replacement visits. Ask for their help charge in advance, and pay official fees only through the proper channel with a receipt.
