Keeping solar panels safe in storms and the monsoon

How to protect your solar system from strong winds, heavy rain and lightning, and what to check after a storm before switching back on.

4 min readUpdated 04-Nov-2026

Before the season: check the structure

Strong pre-monsoon winds can lift panels that are poorly fixed. Before the season, have a mistri check that the frame is bolted firmly to the roof, that clamps are tight and that nothing is rusting through.

  • Tight bolts and clamps on every panel.
  • No cracks in the roof where the frame is fixed.
  • Cables tied neatly, not hanging or rubbing on sharp edges.
  • Good earthing for the frame and the system.

During a storm

  • Stay off the roof. Don't try to hold or cover panels in high wind.
  • During heavy lightning, keep away from the inverter and battery area.
  • If water is entering the inverter or battery room, switch off from the main breaker only if you can do it safely and with dry hands.

After the storm

  • Look from a safe place for broken glass, bent frames or loose cables before switching on.
  • Don't touch damaged panels or cables: broken panels can still produce voltage in daylight.
  • If the inverter or battery got wet, don't switch it on. Call a mistri.
  • Clean the mud film once things are safe; output often drops after dusty rain.
